Dispersing the Myth that CrossFit is for Elite Athletes only
There seems to be a common misapprehension that CrossFit is for ultra fit people:
Time and time again, I hear that our members try to bring their friends who react with "I can't do that!" or "I will train at the gym, so I can do CrossFit". This is madness! Although understandable when people have seen the CrossFit Games videos and the like.
Just like any sport, if you look at the top sportsmen in that field, well most of us are not yet at that level. You may enjoy watching the prowess of Andy Murray on a tennis court - many of us would not stand a chance in a match against him, yet many of us still enjoy a leisurely game of tennis. Some of you may play football at the weekend, but how many of us would get a ball past Ronaldo?
It is the same with CrossFit: there is a difference between the "CrossFit Games" the competition and CrossFit the "sport of health" (helping you improve your mobility by working on your joints and muscle tightness, achieving good movement patterns and getting fitter and thus healthier) practiced in most boxes.
For the women who think you will walk into a gym full of guys admiring their muscles in the mirror, again this is not the case: No mirrors here! But most of all, if we take today as an example (in our box at CrossFit SouthEast Witham) we had a perfect 50% split of men and women. CrossFit is fantastic for women for toning up (not bulking up).
ANYONE CAN DO CROSSFIT - Yes Really!
In fact you will reach you goal and increase your fitness far quicker coming straight to CrossFit rather than try to do this on you own at the gym. You will benefit from the help, support and advice of the coaches, you will be shown and trained to complete the movements with the correct mechanics . All the exercises will be adapted to suit your strength level and fitness level.
So if you are thinking: "There is no way I can do a Pull Up!". Come and give it a go, we will show you how you can achieve this with a band for example and build up your strength over time. The program is built to deliver results, so whilst anyone can start you will see adaptation in your body rapidly.
The motivation you get from training with others is like nothing else and the community spirit in a CrossFit box is the most supportive atmosphere you will come across. There is no judging each other there is only supporting each other in our common goal: getting fitter and healthier.
In fact at CrossFit SouthEast Witham some of the sayings we love and we live by are :
"You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great." and
" What ever you 100% looks like, give it"
